The promotional scale in Taekwon-Do is divided into nineteen ranks – 10 grades (Gups급) and nine degrees (Dans 단). The former begins with the 10th grade the lowest and ends at 1st grade. Degrees begin with the 1st degree and end with the ultimate, 9th degree.
跆拳道的級別共分19個，包括10個等級及9個段位。級由10級開始，最高達1級，段則由1段開始，最高達9段。
The degrees could be further divided into three stages. 1st through 3rd degree is considered the novice stages of black belt. Students are still merely beginners in comparison to the higher degrees. At 4th degree, the student crosses the threshold of puberty and enters the expert class. 7th through 9th is composed of Takwon-Do masters – the elite who fully understand all the particulars of Taekwon-Do, mental and physical.
段亦可再細分為三個階段：1段至3段是黑帶的初段，相對於較高段而言，學員只是新手而已；4段開始，學員就像渡過了青春期一樣，踏進專家的行列；7段至9段為跆拳道師賢，是對跆拳道的精神和技巧均瞭如指掌的精英。

White: Signifies Innocence, as that of beginning a student who has no previous knowledge of Taekwon-Do.

Do-San | 島山
Pseudonym of the patriot Ahn Chang-Ho (1876-1938). The 24 movements represent his entire life which he devoted to furthering the education of Korea and its independence movement.
愛國者安昌浩 (1876-1938) 的雅號。「島山」的24個動作代表他為推動朝鮮教育和朝鮮獨立運動而奉獻的一生。

Green: Signifies the plant's Growth as the Taekwon-Do skill begins to develop.

Won-Hyo | 元曉
Noted monk who introduced Buddhism to the Silla Dynasty in the year of 686 A.D.
於公元686年把佛教傳入新羅王朝的朝鮮高僧。
8th Yellow belt | 8級黃帶
Yellow: Signifies the Earth from which a plant sprouts and takes root as the Taekwon-Do foundation is being laid.
黃色﹕ 象徵大地，表示植物幼苗開始從土地萌芽生根，如初學者剛開始奠下跆拳道的基礎。

Chon-Ji | 天地
Literally means "the Heaven the Earth". It is, in the Orient, interpreted as the creation of the world or the beginning of human history, therefore, it is the initial pattern played by the beginner. This pattern consists of two similar parts; one to represent the Heaven and the other the Earth.
即「天」和「地」的意思。東方社會將「天地」理解為世界創造和人類歷史之始，因此，「天地」是初學者最先學習的套拳。這套拳是由兩個相似的部分組成：一部分代表天；另一部分代表地。

Yul-Gok | 栗谷
Pseudonym of a great philosopher and scholar Yi l (1536-1584) nicknamed the "Confucius of Korea" The 38 movements of this pattern refer to his birthplace on 38 latitude and the diagram represents "scholar".
朝鮮著名哲學家及學者李珥的雅號，有「朝鮮孔子」之稱。「栗谷」的38個動作是指他位於緯道38度的出生地，而演武線則代表「士」(學者)。
4th Blue belt | 4級藍帶
Blue: Signifies the Heaven, toward which the plant matures into a towering tree as training in Taekwon-Do progresses.
藍色﹕ 象徵天空，表示幼苗日漸向上成長，成為大樹，如跆拳道的知識與技巧日漸成熟。
Joong-Gun | 重根
Named after the patriot Ahn Joong-Gun who assassinated Hiro-Bumi Ito, the first Japanese governor-general of Korea, known as the man who played the leading part in the Korea-Japan merger. There are 32 movements in this pattern to represent Mr. Ahn's age when he was executed in a Lui-Shung prison (1910).
以朝鮮民族英雄安重根而命名。安重根刺殺了當時促成日韓合併的主導人物–日本的首任韓國統監伊藤博文。這套拳有32個動作，代表安重根在旅順監獄被處死時的年齡(1910年)。
3rd Blue belt with a red stripe | 3級藍帶紅點
Toi-Gye | 退溪
Pen name of the noted scholar Yi Hwang in the 16th century, an authority on neo Confucianism. The 37 movements of the pattern refer to his birthplace on 37 latitude, the diagram represents " scholar".
16世紀朝鮮著名學者及新儒學家李滉的雅號。「退溪」的37個動是指他位於緯度37度的出生地，而演武線則代表「士」(學者)。
2nd Red belt | 2級紅帶
Red: Signifies Danger, cautioning the student to exercise control and warning he opponent to stay away.
紅色﹕ 代表危險，提醒學員要有控制的能力，並警告對手保持距離。
Hwa-Rang | 花郎
Named after the Hwa-Rang youth group, which originated in the Silla Dynasty in the early 7th century. The 29 movements refer to the 29th Infantry Division, where Taekwon-Do developed into maturity.
以7世紀初新羅王朝的青年軍團花郎徒而命名。這套拳的29個動作代表使跆拳道得以發展成熟的第29步兵團。
1st Red belt with a black stripe | 1級紅帶黑點
Choong-Moo | 忠武
Name given to the great Admiral Yi Soon-Sin of the Lee Dynasty. He was reputed to have invented the first armoured battleship (Kobukson) in 1592, which is said to be the precursor of the present day submarine. The reason why this pattern ends with a left hand attack is to symbolize his regrettable death, having no chance to show his unrestrained potentiality checked by the forced reservation of his loyalty to the king.
李朝海軍大將李舜臣的雅號。他於1952年發明了第一艘裝甲戰艦 (龜船)，被後世視為現代潛水艇的先驅。這套拳的最後一個動作是以左手出擊為終結，象徵他無法向皇帝展示自己的忠誠和才能而含恨而終。
